<a href="https://www.ferropolis.de/en/" target="_blank">Ferropolis</a> has been home to the MELT Festival since 1999. The open-air museum is <a href="https://www.meltfestival.de/en/info/faq#2" target="_blank">centrally located between Berlin and Leipzig</a>, around 20 km from Dessau in Saxony-Anhalt. The peninsula is also <a href="https://www.meltfestival.de/en/info/faq#6" target="_blank">easily accessible</a> via Gr&auml;fenhainichen train station, by train from Berlin via Lutherstadt Wittenberg or directly from Leipzig.

<h2>HISTORY OF FERROPOLIS</h2>

For decades, the Golpa-Nord open-cast mine (Tagebau Golpa-Nord) in Gr&auml;fenhainichen was a place characterized by untamed industrial forces and environmental damage. At the same time, however, it also stood for secure jobs and the remarkable achievements of miners and engineers in lignite mining. But as the future of lignite in Saxony-Anhalt became increasingly uncertain, a decision had to be made: should the past be erased, the traces covered? Or should we build on the ruins and make a completely new start?

Preparatory work for the Golpa-Nord open-cast mine began in 1957, and seven years later, regular lignite mining began, supplying the Zschornewitz and Vockerode power plants in particular with electricity. Lignite mining already had a long history in Central Germany, dating back to the 17th century. In the 1950s, the previously scattered mining areas were also united into a coherent network that expanded enormously: the result was a network of 20 open-cast mines that produced around 100 million tons of coal every year. Almost 60,000 miners were involved, and the coal was used by numerous power plants, briquette factories and smelters. However, this mining left deep scars in the landscape: the Golpa-Nord open-cast mine was one of the smaller ones, but the effort involved was immense: for one bucket of lignite, six buckets of water had to be pumped out and five buckets of briquettes extracted.&nbsp;The end came in 1991 - the entire lignite industry in Central Germany was on the brink of collapse. The total volume of overburden was 341.3 million cubic meters, and 69.9 million tons of raw lignite were mined on an area of 1,915 hectares.

In Golpa-Nord, however, a new vision began to take shape: Ferropolis. This idea originated at the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation and was driven forward by the enthusiasm and perseverance of the local community. Five large pieces of equipment were erected and the conversion of the former day building into an open-air museum was promoted. In 2000, work finally began on flooding the remaining open-cast mine hole. Groundwater and water from the river Mule, 12.5 kilometers away, was used through a pipeline.&nbsp;This created Lake Gremmin with a size of 541 hectares and a volume of approx. 67 million m&sup3;. The lake has a shoreline length of 15.9 km and is 33 m deep at its deepest point.

Today, Ferropolis is a museum, an industrial monument, a steel sculpture, an event venue and a theme park all in one. The dominant element is the gigantic excavating machines, which look like remnants of a bygone era. Since its opening, there have been hundreds of concerts and events, including Herbert Gr&ouml;nemeyer, Metallica, Deep Purple, Linkin Park and many more.

There are a total of five excavators in Ferropolis, giving the site and the MELT its unique atmosphere.

<h3>BIG WHEEL</h3>

The junior among the large open-cast mining machines. On the eastern edge of the island, it looks almost like a lighthouse. Its most striking feature is the huge, 8.4 meter high conveyor wheel, which also gives it its name.&nbsp;

This excavator is equipped with forty huge buckets. With them, it used to be able to extract 1,920 cubic meters of earth per hour. Mad Max borders the arena on the lake side and provides an impressive backdrop for concerts.

The spreader owes its nickname Medusa to its most striking feature, the 360-degree slewing repair crane and the long boom. It is wheelchair-accessible during museum operation with the aid of an elevator and gives visitors a new perspective on the open-air museum.

FERROPOLIS

MELT was held for the first time by the name Melt! Festival in 1997 at the Bernsteinsee in Velten in Brandenburg, and the second time the festival was held at the L&auml;rz airfield. Since 1999, the music festival is being held on the <a href="http://www.ferropolis.de" style="text-decoration: underline; color:#000000;" target="_blank">Ferropolis</a> site near Gr&auml;fenhainichen.

MELT has already received several international awards. In recent years it has won awards for &ldquo;Best Festival&rdquo;, &ldquo;Artist&rsquo;s Favorite European Festival&rdquo; and &ldquo;Green &lsquo;N&rsquo; Clean Festival Of The Year&rdquo; and many more. MELT was held for the first time by the name Melt! Festival in 1997 at the Bernsteinsee in Velten in Brandenburg, and the second time the festival was held at the Lärz airfield. Find all information about past lineups here!

HISTORY

We want to create a festival with you where we can all celebrate free from discriminatory behavior, as if there were no tomorrow &ndash; without losing sight of consideration for one another. We want to raise awareness of everyone&#39;s individual boundaries and ensure that Ferropolis is a place where everyone can feel comfortable. We want all of us to enjoy MELT free from any forms of discrimination such as sexism, racism, queerphobia, etc., and focus on a shared, self-determined festival experience.

<h3>WHERE TO PANAMA?</h3>

We are continuing our initiative from last year: In 2024, &quot;Where to Panama?&quot; will again be the code word you can use to approach our staff. If you have experienced boundary-crossing behavior or feel uncomfortable, you can identify all involved by their pink vests or pink buttons with the eye logo. They will be present during opening hours in Panama (these locations will be marked on the site plan) or will be mobile on the festival grounds.

We offer a place at our events where you can retreat from the hustle and bustle for a moment. The Panama stations and the awareness team are there to provide festival-goers with self-determined and self-defined help/support/listening. Those affected decide for themselves how to perceive their experiences, and the awareness team helps find solutions together.

If a member of the crew acted in a discriminatory way, it is important to note the individual vest numbers of the security or the stand names of the respective trades so that action can be taken afterwards. Please pay attention to the involved people, the location, the stand/trades nearby and the time of any incidents (if possible). 

Our team is briefed accordingly and can be identified by pink buttons. Our awareness team wears pink vests with an eye printed on them. Feel free to approach them directly or come to the retreat &quot;Panama&quot; &ndash; you can find it marked on the site plan.

<h3>AWARENESS TEAM</h3>

This year, the awareness team will be provided by <a href="https://www.instagram.com/all.around_awareness/" target="_blank">AllAroundAwareness*</a>, who will wear pink safety vests and be present on the festival grounds and campsite. At least one team member will always remain at the contact points to offer support there.

MELT attaches great importance to sustainability. For us, it&#39;s not just about creating great music and entertainment. We also want to have a positive impact on society and the environment.

	We strive to protect the environment and pay attention to the responsible use of resources. Sustainable decisions are the basis for our future viability. We are therefore open to new technologies and innovations in order to change and optimize processes.

	Diversity &amp; Inclusion: At MELT, we celebrate diversity in all its facets by bringing together people from different backgrounds, cultures and identities. We take accessibility and the participation of every festival visitor into account from the very beginning.</li>

<h3>OUR GOALS UNTIL 2026</h3>

By 2026, we have focused on pursuing the following goals:

	<li>Achieving a fossil-free energy supply for our festival.</li>
	<li>Increase the recycling rate of our waste to at least 50%.</li>
</ul>

&nbsp;

<h3>How we achieve these goals</h3>

Energy: We optimize the efficiency of our energy supply through precise performance and energy measurements. We identify potential savings and reduce the consumption of fossil fuels by increasing the use of alternative energy sources. Part of the electricity required for our festival is generated by the photovoltaic system in Ferropolis.

Travel &amp; transport: As a large proportion of our festival&#39;s CO2e emissions are generated in the area of travel &amp; transport, we are working on a holistic mobility concept for you. But we also want to optimize logistics. That is why we are working with research institutions to develop future-oriented solutions for festival logistics.

Materials: In line with the concept of the circular economy, we aim to return all materials used to the cycle and minimize the use of new resources. Our partners support us in this: Trash Galore, Foodsharing, Utopia and eSKa. We also ask our brand partners to refrain from using plastic and packaging.

Food &amp; Beverages: In collaboration with Gastrob&uuml;ro, we are expanding our climate-friendly food offering. In 2023, 53% of the food sold was already vegetarian or vegan. We integrate regional suppliers where possible to further increase the sustainability of our catering. Governance: By continuously measuring and monitoring our CO2 emissions (Scope 1, Scope 2 and, to a large extent, Scope 3), we create a solid basis for identifying opportunities for improvement.

&ldquo;The Green Euro&rdquo;: When you buy your festival ticket, you will come across the &quot;Green Euro&quot;. For every ticket sold, we set aside one euro for sustainable measures. We invest one part of this budget in green infrastructure and sustainable measures on the festival site, while the other part is donated to an NGO or initiative carefully selected by our team. In this way, we jointly set an example for environmental protection and social responsibility. In 2023, the green euro was invested as follows:

Donations: MELT donated a portion to the D&uuml;bener Heide Nature Park. This is not far from the festival site. The donation will be used to finance measures to renaturalize the moors and preserve biodiversity.

Festival site: Carelessly throwing away cigarette butts in nature pollutes the environment and endangers the health of animals that can ingest the butts. For easy and fun cigarette butt disposal, we have installed ashtrays throughout the festival grounds and camping area.

Using the CROWD IMPACT app, we conducted a visitor survey and determined and evaluated the arrival behavior of our audience.

 
To clean Lake Gremmin after the festivals, we have financed a cleaning campaign with divers who collect waste from the water to preserve the intact ecosystem.

Together with pupils from the Gesamtschule im Gartenreich (Oranienbaum W&ouml;rlitz), we sorted our waste in a waste analysis and determined which recyclable materials are contained in the waste and how high the recycling rate is. This will enable us to improve our waste concept even further.

We also decided to invest part of the green euro in expanding the solar panels in Ferropolis so that we can gradually supply the MELT with more green electricity. (More on this soon).

An important building block on the way to an even more sustainable MELT is the climate accounting of our festival. It helps us to find out in which areas emissions are generated during festival production and what CO2 footprint our activities have. Only when we know where the most emissions are generated can we take targeted measures to reduce them. <h3>WHAT YOU CAN DO</h3>

	<li>Use public transport, form carpools or use our <a href="https://www.meltfestival.de/en/tickets#travel">bus travels</a>: 80-90% of emissions come from traveling to the festival. Every kilometer traveled by public transport helps!</li>
	<li>Reduce waste: Use reusable cups, cutlery and lunch boxes and help protect our environment.</li>
	<li>Buy sustainable camping equipment: My tent is my castle! Many tents are left lying around after the festival after only a short period of use. Give your tent some attention, take it home with you and bring it back for the next festival season. Also easy: Rent a tent from our partners <a href="https://meltfestival.de/en/tickets#accomodation">Utopia or Mein Zelt Steht Schon</a> for the duration of MELT!</li>
	<li>Dispose of cigarette butts in the garbage can: use pocket ashtrays or our voting ashtrays to keep the environment clean.</li>
	<li>Separate your waste: help ensure that recyclable materials are recycled. Receive bags from us for plastic packaging and residual waste.</li>
	<li>Dispose of the chip on your festival wristband correctly: The chip on your festival wristband is an electronic device that must be disposed of separately from the wristband and the closure at a recycling center or in a shop after the festival: It is considered electronic waste.</li>
	<li>Respect our Lake Gremmin: Do not use shampoos or shower gels in the water. Only apply sun cream after swimming.</li>

<h3>RESEARCH PROJECT ECO2CONCERT</h3>

For the first time in its history, MELT is part of a <a href="https://bmdv.bund.de/SharedDocs/DE/Artikel/DG/mfund-projekte/eco2concert.html" target="_blank">research project</a>. We want to reduce our emissions and to do this we are working with partners from science and research, from the festival sector and from the private sector to collect and model energy, mobility and consumption data and to develop a planning platform for sustainable festival logistics. At MELT, sustainability is a process, not a state. We began pursuing it years ago, because we believe that festivals play an important role in social change.

SUSTAINABILITY

MELT is for everyone! For many years we have been implementing a concept for accessibility on site in cooperation with the <a href="https://kulth-ev.jimdofree.com/">KulTh e.V. / barrier-free festival</a>. In addition to public stands, access routes and toilets for people with walking disabilities, this naturally also includes a low-barrier camping offer. You will soon find more information about this under this link.

For your visit at the festival, you need a regular festival ticket in any case. There are no special tickets for visitors with disabilities. If you have a disabled person&#39;s pass with the remark B, you can have an accompanying person with you without any additional charge. An extra ticket for the accompanying person is not necessary, but he/she must be registered in advance via <a href="mailto:info@kulth-ev.de">info@kulth-ev.de</a>. 
Your accompanying person will then receive a free guest list ticket of your category, which he or she must then also activate in order to obtain the access to the festival. For this you must check in together at the guest list!

Children under the age of 16 are not permitted on the festival grounds. Adolescents over 16 years of age are allowed to enter the open air event until midnight without being accompanied by a person authorized to act on behalf of the child&#39;s legal guardian or parental authority. After 27 unforgettable years, we must announce with heavy hearts that this year will be the final MELT Festival. Due to various factors, we can no longer continue the festival.

If someone had told us back in 1997, our very first year, that the MELT Festival would still exist in 2024, we would have thought they were crazy. In 1999, we found our home in Ferropolis, where we danced, celebrated, and created unforgettable moments for 25 years.

Our goal has always been to create special and unique experiences, a space where one can be free and lose oneself in the music and the night. Thanks to you, this vision became a reality.

The memories of the incomparable charm of Ferropolis, the timeless and legendary Sleepless Floor, the sea of lights at the bumper cars, the magical sunrises, and the many legendary performances and experiences will forever remain in our hearts. We want to thank each and every one of you: for your passion, your loyalty, and the incredible memories we have created together.

Anyone who wants to dance through the night with us one last time, experience the unforgettable vibe, and feel the mystique of MELT is warmly invited to MELT 2024, taking place 11-13 July. <h2>What&#39;s the Kiez?</h2>

Festivals stand for solidarity and wild celebrations, for freedom and for community.&nbsp; 
The current challenges facing our society show us once again how important solidarity in our society and climate protection are. Promoting both at our campsite is therefore particularly important to us. That&#39;s we founded the Kiez. Our neighborhood stands for community, mindfulness for each other and for our environment. Let&#39;s make MELT greener together! &nbsp; 
Kiez is the German word for &quot;neighborhood&quot; or &quot;district&quot; and typically refers to a local area within a city that has a distinct community, culture and familiy atmosphere. That&#39;s why we have a Kiez at our festival.

<h3>WHAT MAKES THE KIEZ SO UNIQUE?</h3>

				<li>Separate your waste so that as much of it as possible can be returned to the cycle.&nbsp;</li>
				<li>The worm bin turns your organic waste into valuable fertilizer! &nbsp;</li>
				<li>Use the solar energy from the solar power station to charge your (cell phone) batteries&nbsp;</li>
			</ul>

			Kiez stands for neighborhood and community and emphasizes the social aspect in each of us. This is exactly what you can experience in the Kiez. Get involved with something you are good at, something you want to share or take part in the joint activities that our Kiez-Meister:innen have prepared for you. For example, the Kiez brunch together with Foodsharing, which takes place every day. &nbsp;&nbsp;

			Would you like to contribute something yourself that promotes the neighborhood in the Kiez? Just write us your ideas in the registration form and we will support you in implementing them. There are no limits to your imagination: Theme parties, karaoke, rap battles, tarot card readings, speed dating, beer pong tournaments - you name it! &nbsp;&nbsp;

			The important thing is that the idea should promote the community and be in line with our Kiez guidelines.

	You respect not only your tent neighbor, but also your environment. The Kiez is a place for you to share, exchange and get to know each other.</li>
	<li>Minimalism 
	You have packed sustainably and only bring the essentials to the festival. Reuse is a matter close to your heart. Have you forgotten something? Use the neighborhood community to support each other.</li>
	<li>Waste separation 
	You keep the neighborhood clean by separating your waste and disposing of it in the designated waste containers for cardboard, plastic, metal, residual waste, organic waste and butts.</li>
	<li>Take home again 
	After the festival, you take everything you brought home with you.</li>

You can register for the Kiez&nbsp;<a href="https://forms.office.com/e/DKUa4Di7u0">here</a>.&nbsp;You can use the following form to register for the Kiez. Important: You must already have a festival ticket to register. &nbsp; 
Everyone must register individually. No group registrations will be accepted. &nbsp; 
You will then receive a confirmation email summarizing all the information. &nbsp;

If you want to contribute something to the Kiez, submit your ideas for the neighborhood via the form as well. The ideas should promote the community and be in line with our Kiez rules. We will support you in implementing them. &nbsp;

<h3>LOCATION</h3>

The Kiez is centrally located on the campsite next to the FAIRopolis area. The area is outlined and marked separately. You can also see the exact location on our site map. &nbsp;

<h3>CHECK IN</h3>

You can check in on site at our reception. Show your registration confirmation on your cell phone - please do not print it out. Don&#39;t worry if that doesn&#39;t work: your name will also be added to our list. Our Kiezmeister:innen will be happy to help you find a suitable place.

<h3>ON SITE</h3>

The less luggage you have, the easier it is to travel by bus, train or bike. We recommend that you use the <a href="https://www.meltfestival.de/en/tickets#accomodation">Utopia or Mein Zelt Steht Schon</a> service and rent the camping equipment on site. To ensure that your rented tent is also placed in the Kiez, please inform us of your booking with Utopia / MZSS in the registration form. The booking for your tent must be made via the Utopia/Mein Zelt Steht Schon website.

For organizational reasons, it is not possible for us to reserve spots for groups. Please arrive in good time to find a suitable spot as a group. &nbsp; 
We will reserve a central space for all those who contribute an idea to the Kiez. &nbsp;

The most stressful part of a festival experience is often the journey there and back. Does the pavilion fit in the trunk? Can someone else carry all the beer? And who can actually drive on Sunday?! These are questions you can&#39;t avoid when planning a festival. But fear not, we have a solution for you with our bus trips! Whether you&#39;re coming from the Netherlands, Switzerland, or various German cities: come to the meeting point, get chauffeured to MELT 2024, and relaxingly brought back to your hometown on Sunday!

<h2>Bus trips from Germany</h2>

With Bassliner, we have a partner who has been the epitome of festival bus trips for years. Whether you&#39;re coming from Munich or Stuttgart, Cologne, Berlin, or Leipzig: With Bassliner, you&#39;ll make your way to MELT relaxed and be dropped off directly at the wristband exchange. You couldn&#39;t have a much better and faster start to the festival year 2024! <h2>International bus trips</h2>

For those coming from surrounding countries, you can book your bus trips through Maximaltrips. Maximaltrips has been a close partner of MELT for years, and is known for its punctuality and reliability. Departures from Zurich, Amsterdam, Maastricht, and other cities are available to you: whether it&#39;s one way or round trip. Prices and information can be found <a href="https://www.maximaltrips.com/busreis/melt-festival" target="_blank">in their shop</a>.

Of course, there are still traditional ways to get to MELT - although they may not offer the comfort of a bus trip. Here are some additional details:

<h2>The sustainable alternative: The train</h2>

At MELT, we place great emphasis on sustainability. And the most sustainable way to travel is still by train! From Berlin, you can reach <a href="https://www.bahnhof.de/en/graefenhainichen" target="_blank">Gr&auml;fenhainichen train station</a> in just over an hour. There are several direct connections per day from Bitterfeld, Leipzig, Halle (Saale), and Lutherstadt Wittenberg to Gr&auml;fenhainichen. From the station, you can then take the free bus shuttle to the campsite. However, please note that during peak times, there may be delays with the bus shuttle, so it&#39;s better to allow for some waiting time to avoid missing your train!

<h2>The classic choice: The car</h2>

Of course, you can also drive to MELT by car. The address is Ferropolisstra&szlig;e 1, 06773 Gr&auml;fenhainichen, and MELT Festival can be easily <a href="https://www.google.com/maps/dir//melt,+Ferropolisstra%C3%9Fe+1,+06773+Gr%C3%A4fenhainichen/@51.7590753,12.4440903,17z/data=!4m8!4m7!1m0!1m5!1m1!1s0x47a6393156f28fe3:0x7468c9a851bd0eda!2m2!1d12.4466652!2d51.7590753?entry=ttu" target="_blank">found on Google Maps</a>. You can reach the festival grounds directly in 20 minutes from the A9 and the Dessau Ost exit. Please make sure that you also own a <a href="http://meltfestival.de/en/tickets">Parking- or Car-/Caravan-Camping-Add-On</a> However, please make sure that you are fit to drive for both the journey there and back!

<h2>For longer distances: Arrival by plane</h2>

If you have a particularly long journey, you can also arrive by plane. No, we don&#39;t have a private airfield, but the airports <a href="https://www.mdf-ag.com/en/passengers-and-visitors/leipzig-halle-airport/" target="_blank">Halle/Leipzig</a> and <a href="https://ber.berlin-airport.de/en.html" target="_blank">Berlin/Brandenburg</a> are not far away. From there, you can easily continue your trip by train!

<h2>For the sporty ones, hop on a bike</h2>

You can also travel to MELT very well by bike. Sure, it&#39;s not for everyone, but if you&#39;re up for it, you&#39;re warmly invited to move towards us using your own muscle power! There&#39;s a secure bike parking lot at the guest list where nothing goes missing. However, bikes themselves unfortunately cannot be taken onto the camping grounds.

Chase &amp; Status (DJ Set)&nbsp;have witnessed a lot, but the enthusiasm they&#39;ve experienced since their celebrated Boiler Room set is new even for them. At MELT, they will also conquer the 30kv stage with one of their intense DJ sets, which are as famous as they are wild.

Anyone who has experienced Yussef Dayes&nbsp;live knows how exceptional his concerts are. The artist, who released his new and highly acclaimed album &quot;Black Classical Music&quot; last year, will perform at sunset on the beach of Lake Gremmin, amidst water and industrial steel giants: Is there a better place for his modern interpretation of fusion jazz? We don&#39;t think so.

Additionally, two German&nbsp;acts, Souly&nbsp;and Domiziana, have been newly confirmed, both of whom are currently also making waves in the German music scene. While Souly recently completed his sold-out tour in Germany, Domiziana has been at the forefront of the current Eurodance-HyperPop hybrids not only since her collaboration with Eurodance-starlett&nbsp;Bl&uuml;mchen.

There is also new addition for the purely electronic stages Big Wheel and Beach Club: Alongside exclusive live sets by DJ Python&nbsp;and&nbsp;Fadi Mohem&nbsp;there are some real gems to be found, including Supergloss, SLIC Unit, DjRUM, D. Tiffany, or DJ Spit b2b Kikelomo, which should not be missed!

The absolute genre mix is completed by performances from the viral sensation Jersey, to Bambii, the live project DJ Swagger and the Program Jazz Busters, Elias, error, H.i.T., and Lucy Dye: If you can&#39;t find something for yourself in this lineup, you might be better off at the Schlager Move.
